'It's complicated.' This option for a relationship status on Facebook tries to capture the vast landscape of relationships that may not fit neatly into one of the preset category or another. This is usually used at the early stages of a relationship. Maybe you've gone out a few times in Uptown or caught a show at the Gutherie, but you have not yet had that defining conversation yet. But sometimes the description is easy, but the question of how to share it is complicated.

'Divorced,' that is another option for a Facebook relationship status. But it can seem awkward to know that for many acquaintances, if not close friends, that relationship status update may be the first thing they have heard about the end of your marriage. There is not a right or wrong decision regarding disclosing your divorce online, but the issue has some up recently as several popular online personalities recently shared that their marriages were soon to end.

One of these 'internet celebrities' is Heather Armstrong, known by her online handle as Dooce. She has about 100,000 daily readers and has shared many aspect of her family life, both the good and the bad. In just the same way that she has shared so much else, she shared that they were going through a trial separation. She went on to talk about just how difficult that can be.

So in the age when even things as mundane as our breakfast choices are sometimes shared via social networks, how are we supposed to handle a life changing event like divorce? Of course there is no easy, one-size-fits-all answer, but hopefully if you choose to do so, it will facilitate support and understand as you move forward with your new life.
